Simply Gym, Cheltenham

Description

A complete 259m² mezzanine solution, including fire protection, staircases, partitioning and suspended ceiling for Simply Gym.

We were appointed to deliver a complete mezzanine floor and internal fit-out package, transforming the available space into a practical, high-quality additional floor area for a new women’s gym and Hyrox area. The project required careful coordination across structural steelwork, access, fire protection, ceilings, partitioning and external works to create a fully finished and compliant solution.

With a 260m² mezzanine floor, bespoke access arrangements and a 1-hour fire-rated specification, this project involved several specialist elements, all managed and delivered by the JUST MCP team.

The Mezzanine

The new mezzanine was designed to provide a substantial increase in usable floor space, for a new Hyrox area which was being installed. The mezzanine included a 260m² total floor area with a black steel work staircase, handrail and mesh personalised with the Simply Gym logo.

There was also scope to provide additional access to the mezzanine for a fire exit. We supplied and installed a fully galvanised external split utility staircase.

The staircase featured:

900mm-wide treads
Mid landing
Top landing
Fully galvanised finish

The external staircase provides safe and practical access while complementing the overall design of the building.

1-Hour Fire-Rated Mezzanine

Fire protection was a major component of the project, with the mezzanine requiring a 1-hour fire-rated specification.

We supplied and installed approximately 260m² of AMF STAR 600 × 600 ceiling tiles and grid, with the ceiling finished in black to complement the overall aesthetic.

External Cladding & Fire Door

As part of the works, we also completed the opening through the existing external cladding to accommodate a new fire door.

The works included, knocking through of the existing external cladding, adding flashings around the new opening where required as well as supply and installation of a new standard-size fire door complete with door frame and furniture.

This ensured the new access route was properly integrated into the existing building envelope.

Bulkheads & Internal Partitioning

The existing lobby ceiling was retained, requiring a bespoke bulkhead solution around the new mezzanine. We installed approximately 53 linear metres of bulkhead, equating to around 164m² of bulkhead area, carefully formed around the existing ceiling and surrounding areas.

We also constructed approximately 17m² of metal stud partitioning along the wall dividing the ladies’ area and gym.

Project Overview

This project was a great example of a complete mezzanine and internal fit-out solution, combining structural steelwork with access, fire protection, ceilings, partitioning and external works.

From the initial planning through to the final finishing touches, our team worked closely with the customer to ensure that each element was delivered to the required specification and that the different aspects of the project worked together seamlessly.

The finished mezzanine has created a significant amount of additional usable floor space, while the fire-rated ceiling, column protection and dedicated stair access provide the necessary functionality and safety for the space.
